Lat Pau, the first ever Chinese newspaper established in Singapore, was set up in 1881 and its distributions were terminated in 1932. Its name “Lat Pau” was derived from the word “Selat” (Malay for “Straits”), with Selat-po being another name for Singapore used in earlier times.
Through analyses of texts and images in Lat Pau’s advertisements, this talk explores the marketing strategies to convey ideas of product, price, placement, promotion, emotion and consistency.
