Cultural Revolution Ceramics Symposium

18 Feb 2016

8.30am - 4.30pm

Ngee Ann Auditorium
Asian Civilisations Museum

‘Red’, ‘bright’ and ‘shining’ – characters of the art during Cultural Revolution. They are testament to the extraordinary passion of the Chinese artists for the movement launched by Mao Zedong and the tumultuous party politics they tried to support. International scholars and experts will come together at this bilingual symposium to present the artistic, cultural and historical perspectives on the art produced during this period, with a particular emphasis on wengeci 文革瓷 or Cultural Revolution Ceramics.

Produced by the finest craftsmen of the period, wengeci exemplifies the superb quality in ceramics production in China. The symposium will highlight three aspects – what these vibrant, militant, often gaudy images meant to the producers, patrons and their audiences at the time; explore what they mean today, both in their original form and as revolutionary icons appropriated for a new consumer; lastly, to encourage the continued exploration of the subject.
